His rendering of the constellations is so precise that it is possible to pinpoint the date of the painting to September 16-17, 1888. True to form, he expresses the night sky in a blaze of emotion and color, without any touch of black whatsoever. He set up his easel beside the neighbouring building, at the north-east corner of the Place du Forum, so as to capture the outdoor patio of the Café Terrace in its entirety.
